The Grad Lab offers workshops in a variety subjects. They are usually held in the Grad lab but may move depending on the needs of the class.

| Sept. 10 | Digital imaging and printing |
There is more to digital printing than just hitting Apple-P. This workshop will start with the basics of preparing images for printing on the lab's two large format printers. We will cover the important details in file preparations, the basics of color management and most importantly how to get the most out your experience using the lab. | Sept. 17 | Introduction to video editing |
Covering the basics of shooting and editing video on Mini DV tapes this workshop will also introduce students to Apple's Final Cut Pro software. We will look at the various camera options and then moving into logging, capturing and editing video in Final Cut. | Sept. 24 | Capturing sound | Whether creating sound or video work high quality audio is essential to a good result. We will look at the variety of microphones available for checkout. The various devices for capturing sound and how to put it all together. A brief look at bringing sound into ProTools will be covered. | |
| Oct. 1 | Processing: Programming for Artists |
Interested in having more control over the way the computer handles your images, movies or graphics? Want to learn to make simple computer games? Created for artist, Processing is great introduction to computer programming. Whether you are creating highly intricate computer illustration or making interactive sound and video works, Processing provides a way to dip into any of these possibilities while learning a simple but expandable programming language, and its free! No experience necessary. |

| Oct. 8 | Electronics I: From Circuit bending to blinking lights | This workshop will be a short introduction to using electronics in art. This is a great workshop for anyone interested in adding sensors, lights, or sound to their artwork. It is also an important preamble to our microcontroller workshop (Electronics II) in two weeks. Whether your just curious or really ready to get started this is a great intro to electronics basics. | |
| Oct. 15 | Intro to editing sound with ProTools | This workshops will cover the basics of using ProTools to edit sound. Picking up from our last workshop this one will help you figure out what do to once you have captured your sound. The workshop will cover the basics of sound editing, modifying and filtering. We will also glipse working with sound from video and basics of sound file formats. | |
| Oct. 22 | Electronic II: Add interaction to your art | Who says your artwork has to sit still and be unresponsive to viewers? This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect, motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller. | |
| Oct. 29 | Animation using AfterEffects | This workshop will introduce students to Adobe's 2D animation software AfterEffects, often described as the "Photoshop of video." We will learn how to use this software to create motion graphics, such as shapes and text. We will learn how to import video & still images into AfterEffects, how to blend all of the above together using layers & masks, and how to make a movie. This is an introductory level workshop, to show how one might integrate AfterEffect into their other video and motion work. | Matthew Fischel |
| Nov. 5 | High Definition (HD) Video | Come January all television broadcasts will be the new High Definition format. Many manufactures only make HD equipment now. We will take a look at the details of this new media format, cover the details of using the labs HD equipment and cover the complications of using this memory intensive video. | Chris Harring |

| Feb. 19 | Authoring DVDs | This workshop will take a look at Apple's DVD Studio Pro. The process of creating a DVD can be a bit confusing. Its not quite like a webpage, its not quite like Final Cut. We will cover the basics of making simple self-playing looping DVDs to more advanced menu based DVDs. | Kelly Egan |

| Mar. 5 | Creating a (almost) FREE media workstation | Once you have bought your expensive computer there is still all that expensive software to buy. This workshop will take a look at the vast amount of open source software available. We look at a number of open source projects including versions of the Linux Operating system specifically designed for media artists. How do you set all this up? What do you need? | Oct. 16 | Lighting for Video |
Good lighting can make low-resolution video look like film. This workshop will serve as an introduction to lighting concepts and practices, from basic lighting schemes to more scientific ideas like color temperature and the use of gels. We will also discuss how lighting effects every aspect of your shot, from depth of field to shutter speed, and how tools like light meters aren't as outdated as you might think. If you have shot grainy, flat-looking video in the past and are looking to avoid that in the future, this will help. | Chris Harring |

The workshop will also cover the use off slide film and digital cameras in the studio environment. Feel free to bring some of your work with you to be photographed during the workshop.
