New HD Video equipment

The Grad Lab has just purchased new high definition (HD) video cameras for checkout. The star of the new equipment is the Sony HVR-Z7U camera. HVR-Z7U is an HDV video camera which means that it records a slightly compressed video format but still produces high quality images.

The HDV format means that it can record on to regular mini DV tapes. In addition to the tapes the camera has a special attachment for recording video to CompacFlash which means you don’t need a tape at all.

You can use the CompactFlash recorder alone, as a backup for your tapes or in a special relay mode where the camera records to tape, then as the tape nears its end switches automatically to the CompactFlash recorder and back to tape once you insert a new tape. This means you could should continuous video for more than an hour. With HD that would be an enormous file but it is still a possibility.

Beyond the HVR-Z7U we have also purchased 3 consumer grade Canon Vixia HG21 camcorders. These use no tapes at all and record to a harddisk built in to the camcorder. These record in AVCHD format.

You can checkout the Canon’s right away. If you would like to use the Sony’s you need to complete a short workshop on how they work.

Here is a short tutorial on how to use the CompactFlash recorder with the HVR-Z7U.

DVD Authoring: Looping

DVD Authoring is a complex full featured DVD creation tool. Creating a looping DVD is fairly simple however if you follow these instructions.

Flash Videos

Playing with videos in Flash.
*Note there are more Flash tutorials on this site under "Web and networking"

1.
Choose a (quicktime) video that you would like to use.
-Go to file > import > import video

-I’m going to be using one of Robby Rackleff’s videos (already on this computer).

-I want to embed this video in SWF and play in timeline

-I want the symbol to be "Embedded Video" and the audio track to be "Integrated"

-You can adjust the quality of your video

-You can also crop and resize the video

-You should have a video icon like this in your library.

2. At this point you want to make sure that your frame rate matches your original video
(most likely 30 frames per second).

Also, you might need to adjust the size of your document to match your video (720x480).

3. I created a title page on the first frame and put a stop(); in the actions layer
    - Notice I have 4 layers: actions, a title layer, buttons, and the movie on the bottom layer
