"No Photographs, Please."
Graduate Photography & Digital Imaging Department Show
November 14 - 29, 2007
Fox 3 Gallery
Opening Reception: November 16th, 5-7 PM

Throughout the past six months, I have been researching the fundamentals of MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging. As a photographer, the creation of images of the human brain via the MRI scanner was instantly fascinating. Beyond my interests in the images themselves, I have undergone three different MRI scans over the past ten years for different neurological reasons. Each time I was rolled into the seemingly dark abyss of the scanner, my heart raced and my mind ran wild.
1st Scan: Sometime in 1998
I was first scanned sometime in 1998 to look for a brain tumor. Actually, every time that I have had an MRI scan of my brain, it was to rule out a brain tumor - something I am very happy to report was the case in every single instance. During my sophomore year of high school, I began to have incredibly painful headaches that would last for a really long time. Eventually my headaches began to spread out in a way, causing intense lower back pain as well. The headaches seemed to be "behind my eyes", so I headed to the optometrist - with my mother, of course - to get checked out. He immediately noticed something wrong - my optic nerves were badly swollen. This being a symptom of brain tumors, we then headed straight to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to see a neuro-opthamologist, Dr. Grant Liu. He took one look at my optic nerves and prescribed an MRI scan.
