I just did this painting for Nicholas Blechman at the
New York Times Book Review. It’s for a review of a new
biography of the celebrated author Edith Wharton (who
also was an influential interior designer).
Edith Wharton famously wrote, in her short story “The
Fullness of Life”, that a woman’s life is like “a great
house full of rooms”, most of which remain unseen:
“and in the innermost room, the holy of holies, the soul
sits alone and waits for a footstep that never comes.”
